Finally, depsite years and years of lobbyists and lawyers working for Disney, the original vision of Mickey Mouse has entered the public domain.

The entire point of copyright was to promote the creation of new works. If you retroactively extend it, as Congress did on Disney's behalf multiple times, that can't promote creation as the works have already been created. It's only a handout to the owners of those works.
